Ok, this is my second season with my new getaway, everything is going not bad but the constant annoying problem with the rig slopping around is driving me crazy! I've got the rig as tight as possible using the pre drilled holes in the adjusters. Would it be ok to have the side stays shortened and turnbuckles installed? |

Use the mainsheet to tension the rig. That will allow you to get the adjustement to a lower hole and the rig tight. With the boat on the beach and in light to no wind... travel the system to the end of the track and hold there. Tension the mainsheet. The shroud on that side would go slack. Adjust to a lower hole. You can repeat on the other side to make it equal if you want. |

So how tight should the rig be? I have had my Getaway a few weeks and found that when I am on a broad reach the main often bangs around. This is my first cat and I thought it was the nature of the beast. |

How tight? When on the beach and unsheeted... The wires should be snug and the mast should be held firm. Once sailing and sheeting the sail the lee shroud goes a bit slack. This is mostly due to the mast bend while sheeted... shortens the distance from the tang to deck / wires go slack a bit. |

I usually setup my Getaway by myself. When I step the mast, I set the shrouds in the least tight hole on the adjuster plates. Once I lift the mast and attach the forestay, I tighten the shrouds. To do that by myself, I place the shackle at the end of the main halyard on a mast cleat to secure it there. I then tie a bowline knot in the other end of the main halyard. I stand beside the adjuster plate and put my foot in the bowline loop at the end of the halyard. I sort of stand on the loop to bring the mast to that side of the boat. By adjusting how much weight I put on the loop, I am able safely reset the shrouds to almost any hole I wish using two hands instead of one. I reset both sides in minutes and untie the bowline.
