Does anyone know the mast tang rivet dimensions for a Getaway/H16? I know they have to be stainless but can I just pick em up at the hardware store or are they specialized? I coudn't find dimensions in the catalogue. |

The rivets are a stainless alloy called Monel. The Hobie part number is 8010181. It's a 6-4 panhead. That equates to a 3/16" diameter rivet with a grip range of approx 1/8 to 1/4 inch. If you can find a closed-end rivet it would be better. Otherwise, you really need to use rivet caps between the tang and the mast to keep water out of the mast. The Hobie part number for the rivet cap is 8011291. Brian C |

Thanks for the information. I have found rivets like you described, everything accept the monel (they are stainless). Do you have any idea why Hobie used monel - is it stronger or is it a galvanic issue? I'm going to have to put these in for now b.c. the mast tang actually broke where the jesus shackle attaches and must be replaced asap. Han |

Sorry... I'm not a materials engineer. From playing with machine tools, I know that a lot of stainless is very brittle (and really hard on machining tools). I suspect that the monel is more ductile, easier to work and easier to pull. Matt? Brian C |

Like you I was curious so I did a little research. The articles I found said that monel is stronger than steel and extremely corrosion resistant, including galvanic reactions with both aluminum and stainless. It also said to be more "malleable" than steel but that it work hardens instantly! I would have thought those two would be mutually exclusive. |
