sorry forgot to mention....
yeah you have to uncleat everything or she may just take off on you
even with the main and jib uncleated they do still provide lift once the wind gets under there.

I've read a lot about people having problems righting their getaway solo. I'm a small guy only about 150Lbs...and I have never had a problem righting my Getaway by myself. Maybe I have some special technique I should share. First off I used to swim out to the mast to swing the mast into the wind. Since standing on the bow isn't enough to get it pointed into the wind. I discovered the other day though that it was much easier to just grab the bow and swim it around. To get the boat up I get up there...pull in the slack on the righting line...lean back....typically leaning back is never enough to get the boat moving back upright so I bounce it...I bounce up and down on the line timed just right and the mast rocks right up out of the water..once a little wind get under that sail...poof if comes right over...I always pull tight on the righting line as the other hull comes down to keep it from flopping over onto its other side. Anyone else have any other experiences? |

Good tip. I'm reassured that I may be able to right it solo. I've always unhooked the main sail before righting, simply because of the suction which occurs with the water while raising. I'll try it your way and see how well it works. tom |

I weigh 240 lbs and am 6'4" and can right the boat easily in moderate wind if mast is pointed toward wind. |
