Post subject:  new trapeze offered for the wave?

I was thinking of purchasing the new Hobie trap setup for my wave so my wife (115 lbs) could trap, or possibly myself (180 lbs). She's always standing up in the boat as it is no mater how hard it blows. Has anyone out there installed this? Any thoughts on this? The mast seems too far forward to me to trap on my own without being at a uncomfortable angle.

Yes, not good for heavier crew or trying to sail single handed. The trap system on the Wave was designed for training purpose (small crew only).

I keep seeing posts about the Trap being designed for training and light weights. So what does this exactly mean. Is it the actual design of the Trap itself, and if designed differently would be good for a 180 lb person?

Or, is it about the strength of the boat structure? If the limitation is in the structure of the boat, what is the limiting factor, mast, cross member, rigging or a combination of them all?

It is limitations of the boat design mostly.

Small sail area means that there is not enough power to fly a hull with a heavier person on the trapeze.

Mast-forward design means that a single handed sailor would not comfortably trapeze in the skipper (aft) position. The earlier model tiller / rudder system did not allow for a hiking stick which further limited single handed trapeze.

Matt,
Thanks for the response. I figure some adjustments could be made to "make it work". However if the boat wasn't designed for it, that's another issue. All I would wind up doing is breaking something.

Matt, could you define small crew ?
100 lbs ? 150 lbs ? 200 lbs ?

Think kids, under 100lbs

That seems a bit low.
Matt, what is the official upper limit ?

There is no "official" weight limit. Just a matter of the limited power that the Wave main has. Someone heavy will simply cause the boat to heal to weather.
