I saw this at Chic's Sporting Goods over the weekend for $50. It gets good user reviews, supposedly sounds pretty decent... I've always wanted some music out on my WAVE, I am thinking this is the hot ticket. Anyone see, try, or have this? Know any good places/deals? I found it at Target.com for $40. I'm figuring that I'll wrap the speakers in plastic. I already have a nice waterproof Pelican case for my mp3 player, and even if I didn't, it comes with a plastic case. I'll bungee that bad boy to the tramp. Incidental splashing should be OK. |

UPDATE: I received my ICY TUNES cooler with mp3 player amplifier, it sounds pretty freakin' good, I must say. I bought a package of plastic (with elastic) bowl covers for $1.99 at the supermarket. Inside the package was (2) 3" diameter plastic covers that fit the speakers pretty well (they look like mini shower caps). I pushed the elastic around the outside of the speakers and down behind them...so speakers are all completely surrounded in plastic and waterproof, now. I'll take it out on Saturday with my weekend sail and let you know. So far, though, I am pleased. |

UPDATE UPDATE: For all that may be interested, I have taken the Icy Tunes cooler out twice, now, and I am enjoying it. Last weekend the wind was G R E A T, I was flying a hull with much splashing up and over the cooler, and it worked well. Speakers and internal components all stayed dry. I've been out for a total of over 7 hours, and the batteries are still OK, so it will last all day for sure. I'd give it an 8 out of 10 for overall performance out on my WAVE. PROS: Well constructed, good quality, attractive, reasonable amount of storage with (2) additional "dry" compartments (besides the cooler area). CONS: - The speakers aren't waterproof, so I wrapped them in plastic (see above) - The volume is a little lower than I would have hoped. Mostly, it is a decent volume, but sometimes, it would be nice to be able to really crank it up. It's fairly loud, sounds good, but people on the beach won't be dancing, that's for sure. - There is no plastic bucket insert in the cooler area, which makes it a bit "floppy" when one ties it down to the boat. I bought a plastic tub at Target for about $3.00 that fits comfortably inside the cooler area, stiffens it up and makes it that much more sturdy. Overall, I recommend it as a nice solution to have music out on the boat while sailing. |
