Post subject:  moving the pins on the cables
HI,

this one stymies me. My dealer told me that if I move the pins from the third hole to the second hole on the two side cables supporting the mast, that my Hobie Wave would heel and be much faster in the water.

However, I tried to move the cable position on my own and found it an impossible task. This is a job for at least two people.

Anyone have any good ideas on how to do this by yourself?

Use the halyard to pull the tension off the shrouds so you can move pins. I use two clevis pins per shroud, only removing one at a time. That way it gives you some margin of safety in case you slip.
Raking the mast will actually limit heeling a little, but allows you to push it harder in hight winds, so yeah, you can fly a hull with less risk of pushing the lee bow under. Also allows you to point higher into the wind.

So what would be the advantage of having mast in upright position (less raked). Maybe more speed in light air?

Yes, more vertical mast is more powerfull... to a point. You also shift the power forward and load up the bows. This can cause the boat to pitch forward. Raking the mast aft will de-power and also help the boat both point higher and avoid a pitch pole (cartwheel forward). Its a balance!
