Post subject:  2000/2001 Wave
I may have an opportunity to purchase a 2000/2001 Wave (keep my fingers crossed). I have sailed "newer models" down in Jamaica. I was wondering how different the 2000/2001 model is from the 2009 Wave I also have my eye on? Thanks.

It will probably have the H16-style rudders and tillers, so you'll have to work on the cams occasionally. It may or may not have access ports on the rear of the hulls. Not much else has changed over the years.

It's a good design either way. You'll have fun, guaranteed!

Where are you located?

Located West Bloomfield, Michigan (SE Mich) across the street from Walnut Lake. Any problem putting in access ports? Did it on my Sunfish.

No kidding? I live in Commerce, just outside WB in a sub that backs up to Lower Staits Lk.

There's no reason to add ports unless you have a problem in the hull, or want a place to store things off the trampoline. It's a bit different than installing them in a fiberglass boat.

And the rudder system on the older waves originated on the Hobie 17, not the 16 (the 14 and 16 have much different castings). It's the same system used to update the 18 and is used on the 20 and Tiger as well. The blade is the same across all the boats except the 20 and Tiger.

Well put a deposit on the Wave last night. It is a 2001 model and is suppose to be in great shape (stored in doors thru the winter). I will be going to look at it/pick it up in the next few days. What type of things should I be looking at as to the condition/replacement needs when I check it over? Thanks.

Baiscally, all the "soft" stuff - but given the age (relatively young), probably just the lines (ropes).

If it's been in Michigan all it's life, I wouldn't worry about the standing rigging, especially if you're just using it on Walnut Lake (a fairly small lake, for those who don't know).

There's very little to go wrong on a Wave. It's about as simple as it gets.

Is there a cover made for the tramp to prevent sun damage when left outside during the season?

If you have access to a Harbor Freight Tools, they sell a 7.5' x 9.5' blue tarp for about $5 which nicely covers the tramp and the seat pads. I also buy their $5 cannister of bungees to hold it on. Their tarps aren't the greatest, but they keep the bird and tree droppings off. They sell silver ones also which may be a little better for sun protection.

Even though its not an old boat, there are still some things that could have been damaged or lost. I would suggest downloading the Wave Manual and looking at the packing contents, make sure everything listed is there, such as the rigging, blocks, battens, etc.

I would also layout the sail to make sure the seams look good and there are no rips.

Make sure the mast (both sections) are straight and the upper section doesn't have any cracks in it.

Lastly, look over the hulls for any damage or repairs.

Thanks Charlie for the tips. Will check all that out. Also, harbor Frieght is about 7 miles from my house. Will pick up a tarp.

Well, This past Saturday I picked up my Wave from "centralmichigansailor". It is now sitting in my garage. The Wave is totally and completely PRISTINE. It looks brand new. It is the 2001 model with classic tramp. It looks like it has hardly ever been used. My kids are totally psyched. The only thing I need is a Cat Trax to move the Wave out of the water and around on our beach. I will order that in the next few days. Hopefully will have her in the water very soon. Lake is still "a little" chilly. Thanks everyone for all your help and recommendations. My Sunfish will be sad sitting on the beach this summer.

Congrats on the new boat! You'll all have a blast.

Rather than cat trax, if you don't have far to go, you can lay 2 or 3 PVC pipes (3" or 4") on the ground along the way. The boat will slide on those like ice.

If you're up for a road trip, we have a Wave regatta in Indianapolis on May 14-16, as part of the Mayor's Cup on Eagle Creek Reservoir. I can forward you an email about it if you're interested.

She needs to sit 20-30 feet up the beach to be out of the way. Will need something like the Cat Trax. Heard about the regatta from someone in Florida today! He said it is an awesome event.
Unfortunately, I have to work that weekend.
