| Post subject: | Main sheet too tight causing rigging failure? |
Newbie sailed twice in a Wave. When sailing close hauled I pulled in the main really tight and cleated it. With the block on the wave you get a lot of purchase. Anyway conditions were about 15 knots in a sound. Waves were nothing really. Rigging failed where it connects to the hull. Mast fell. No one hurt or anything. Got a tow back to dock. My thinking in doing this makes the the bottom of the sail flat and is better makes her go faster Since it looks like a fiberglass boom. How much do I need to pull on that main sail line. Just taught or REALLY hard. I'm no body builder but not weak either. Did I contribute or cause this by really pulling hard on the main sheet? Thanks. |

What part on the rigging exactly? The wires, a cleat, shackle? Unless you Hulked out, I would think that whatever it was, was well overdue for replacement. How tight you need it, I will leave to the more experienced Wave owners. |

This is likely a fatigue failure from use over time. The Wave is very over built, so normal, heavy and resort use in high winds and with heavy crew loads are very much expected. Fatigue can be accelerated by leaving the boat in the water or mast up with the rig moving around with wind and waves all day and night. |

If the Wave is going to be kept set up during the sailing season I understand that the mast should be tied off so that it doesn't rotate. Should the rigging also be tightened? |
