Post subject:  Hobie Wave Hull Questions
Hello,
I have had my hobie for a few years now and today I was putting the rudders on my boat and I noticed that inbetween the "seats" my hulls are kind of soft. I am wondering if this is how is from the factory or not. If it is a problem could I buy new hulls, if I could how much would it run me?

They are softer directly under each seat area. The hull is a little thinner just under the pad. Should not be a problem there. If on the hump between the seats you may have a fracture in the inner foam layer. Not an immediate concern, but could crack someday. Never seen that though.

I also have a wave Hull question. I am looking at a used wave now that has some cracks where the stats attach to the hull and at the drain plugs. All areas have been coated with sealant that appears to be holding.

My question is how worried should I be about the cracking at the side stay? If I can get the boat at a good enough price I would be okay with repairing it on occasion but do not want to buy it if it is not going to be safe to sail. Any input would be much appreciated.

I had a boat that was cracking at the front cross bar and at the side stays. I drilled the ends of the crack and used "GFlex" to fill the cracks; look for my post on this forum.

For the side stay I made custom plates that were longer than the factory plates and ran a bolt through the hull and placed a nut and large fender washer on the inside. I think this is a permanent repair and will never fail.

I beat on the boat really hard and the cracks never grew nor did I feel like the side stay was going to fail.

Drain plug cracks should be ok. Make sure the rudder mounts are not cracked.

Remember the Wave cannot be plastic welded.

I found out the crack is not at the shroud mounting but at the bridle mounting up front. Does this make a difference?

How did you access inside of hull to put the fender washer on?

Also I read the G-Flex can be tough in install. Did you have to sand some of the cross linked surface off to access the foam core?

the bridal up front may be harder to repair. Take a look at this "boom bail" http://www.westmarine.com/buy/ronstan-- ... cordNum=38 from west marine, I think this could be bolted through and take place of the bridal eye strap.

I only used the gflex from the outside as I could not reach all the way up to the front cross bar to apply it there.

There are access ports under the blue seat pads.

thanks for input! much appreciated. Agreed the cracks at or near the plugs would be least concern as those can simply be siliconed.
