I just replaced all the wire rigging on my Wave. I noticed that the D shackle connecting the bridle wires and forestay has no mechanism to prevent (wire/whatever) it from coming undone. I further noticed that the D shackle on the comptip connecting all the rigging was the same and was already loose! I typically raise the mast at the beginning of the season and then lower it at the end of the season, making it a nuisance to check the shackle on the comptip. How do other people deal with this problem? I am looking at two possible solutions (or both at once): 1. Use loctite blue 242 when tightening the D shackles. 2. Buy new D shackles that have a hole in the end of the pin, such that I can wire it. Also: A. Should I use loctite blue 242 when tightening the bolts holding the eyestraps (part 38120011) to the bows? B. Should I use loctite blue 242 when tightening the ball that the mast sits on? Thanks in advance for your responses, especially from the ever-helpful Matt. |

Usually a hard tightening with pliers or vise grips does it, but Loctite would also add a layer of security. If you can find the shackles with drilled pins for wires... that would do it for sure. |

Makes sense for mast up storage. One key thing... limiting the mast rotation and keeping the rig tight will reduce wear and loosing of hardware. Wrap a line around the mast and tie off to one side to force a bit of rotation. This will keep the mast from rotating back and forth unnecessarily. |

Old guy rambling ... Used to be normal practice to buy one with a hole or drill a hole in head of the shackle that holds the shrouds and forestay and then wire it with some soft wire. I think mine's brass. A small roll will last you at least 40 years, even if you give away bits to other guys on the beach. If there is a separate shackle for the trap wires then do that one too. That was sometimes referred to as the "Jesus shackle", it's the thing that holds everything up. Tuck the ends of the safety wire inside the shackle. Especially if you use a spinnaker. As you pointed out if you do mast up storage it's a PIA to check the shackle up there. The ones down here you can check. Wrap the swages with electrical tape. Three layers to begin with then one layer each year for the rest of the boat's life. Protects the mast. Leave just enough room for the shackle to go through in the thimble. First rule of Hobie sailing: All ring dings must be taped. Also wrap everything even close to being sharp with electrical tape. Swimming events often happen unexpectedly. Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay away. |
