When you lower the mast, do you keep the pin in?
I just practiced stepping the mast on our new wave (no wind to actually go sailing).
After lowering the mast, I tried to remove the pin and it was difficult. Once I got it out, I noticed it was very bent. Fixed it up. But I don't want to do that again.

The purpose of the pin is to keep the mast base securely attached to the step. You definitely want the pin in when raising and lowering the mast. On captive ball mast step systems, it is possible to raise and lower the mast without the pin as long as you keep forward pressure on the mast so it doesn’t pop off the ball, but it is much safer to step with the pin in. If the mast base pops off the step unexpectedly, the mast could easily be dropped causing injury or damage.

I made this same mistake many times back in the day.
