Post subject:  Capsize advice needed
I regularly sail my Wave in winds around 15mph.
The waters I sail in can have a fair chop, I have buried one or both bows on several occasions but have yet to capsize (thankfully).
A capsize is merely a matter of time and momentary loss of concentration IMHO.
I want to practice righting and boarding my Wave before it becomes a necessity.

I am somewhat hefty (230lb), which is good for ballast but not much else.

So, two questions:

1. How can I get back onboard a right-side-up Wave in deep water?
I have tried from the sides and cannot manage it.
I don't want to grab the hiking straps as they look too flimsy for this job.
The stern is too problematic with the tiller bar and rudders.
The bow seems to be the place.
I am very open to some tips.

2. How can I deliberately capsize?
I want to do this initially in calm water with a buddy standing by with his boat, should I not be able to right/board the Wave.
Again, tips welcome.

If they are good for hiking, they are good for pulling oneself back. I pull myself using them after capsize. Just keep an eye on them, you may need to put few stiches once in while.

I usually pull my self from the bow. First I pull myself using righting line, than grab nearest hiking strap. You mentioned chop above, so try not to be hit by a crossbar. This guy added ladder to make it easier to get back.

Method, that tops my list of capsizing ways, is to sit on old windward side during tack and sheet in :lol:

Thanks.
I was thinking of pulling on an extended main halyard from my buddies boat and toppling it over.
...but sitting on the wrong side of the boat while tacking sheeted in much simpler.
I'm sure it will give him a good laugh too.

I will also try the Ozzie's (VICTOR WARRIOR) idea of a simple rope ladder.
BTW: I have previously viewed that guy's other youtube videos and think they are great.
Funny that I never noticed the simple rope ladder.

it's simple to tip it over.


Stand up on side of boat and hold on to the shroud.

Lean over and vola it tips over

Just watch out for the mast coming at you.

do this is shallow water.

the try to get back on..

This is how you tip over the boat on dry land as well if you have to move you lines around or make an opps and pull up you main sail line all the way to the top.

Have fun and learn how to get back on will help you when it does happen. oh and it will just a matter of time.

Use the hiking straps. They are plenty strong enough.
Are you trying to pull yourself straight up onto the boat? I find that very difficult. I grab a hiking strap, lay along side the boat and swing a leg up onto the hull. Then I basically roll up onto the boat. Use my natural floatation to assist me.
