Post subject: | Issues with Lee Helm |
I have a 2008 Hobie Club Wave with a traveler & Jib Kit. I've noticed there is actually a bit of Lee helm when sailing which is a bit concerning especially during strong gusts. I have adjusted the rake of the mast back a bit but I'm still getting some Lee helm. I'm only two slots away from the bottom positions on the shroud adjusters. I assume the jib kit plays a part here putting more force on the front of the boat. besides continuing to push the mast rake back is there any other possibilities to reduce lee helm? Ideally a touch of weather helm is the desired balance correct? |

Same on both tacks? If rudders are warped you can feel lee on one tack and weather on the other. Try kicking up one rudder to narrow it down. |

You know what I thought I was crazy but I did think I was getting weather helm on a port track and lee helm on a starboard. I didn't know rudders could cause that. They don't look warped but I was actually sailing in some pretty shallow waters and the rudders did occasionally catch the bottom and kick up a bit. I would bet that's the culprit. Thanks for the info Matt! Next time I head out I'll be sure to check the rudders if I feel Lee Helm again. Tom |

Check the foil shape to see if one side is flatter maybe. Could be filled with Bondo to reshape if needed. |
