Post subject: | Comptip Fibers exposed |
Hi All, I just purchased a 2008 Wave and in my excitement I didnt realize that the comptip has exposed fibers running the full length of the forward side (see images). I cant tell if this is UV damage, or friction from the halyard, or both, but the rest of the comptip is also slightly discolored/pale. What can be done to repair this? is it a matter of just taping the hardware and epoxying over it? if so, is there a certain product that I should use? Full details are much appreciated, as I have never done fiberglass repairs. While I am prepping the boat to sail, is there anything else in particular I should be on the lookout for to repair/replace (already looking into new lines/mainsheet block). I believe the boat sat outside on a beach/moored during summer and was elsewise stored indoors. Hulls are in great shape. Sails were stored indoors and are actually still in good shape. Has the jib kit installed. Thanks in advance, and excited to get sailing again after a few years without a boat. ![]() ![]() |

I’ll let others chime in, but I think you can sand it with some 120ish grit to smooth down any loose fibers and to get some “tooth” to the surface, roll/brush on some epoxy (West system is widely accepted) to secure the loose fibers. Let it cure. Then finish sand (220/300/400 etc) and then spray the whole comptip with black paint (mask where appropriate). |
