| Post subject: | Sail with one rudder? |
Matt: Is it advisable to try to sail with one rudder (e.g. when steering into shallow shore in a side-shore tack) by twisting tiller arm so that one rudder stays down while the other is up? The swivel system for the rudder arm-tiller arm assembly seems to be able to handle it, but was curiouls on Hobie's thoughts on this. thanks |

The current rudder system on the Wave and Getaway (EZ Loc system) is not set up for single rudder sailing. In most cases... on all cats, both rudders are advisable for best control. Mostly racers are using a single rudder (when at speed) and typically on the downwind leg. Some guys can pull one up when sailing upwind, but loss of control is more likely with just one rudder down. |

What about coming into shallow water like he is asking about, if you pop the far rudder up it is easier when you get in really shallow. |

Sailing with one rudder in shallow areas or with lower wind speeds is alright, you dont lose much control. I usually bring mine into shore with one rudder. When you're moving at higher speeds use both rudders, you sacrifice alot of control sailing with on rudder in high winds, you'll end up fighting the rudder. Hope that helps |
