Whew -- I just got the price quote for a pair of these! We live on a small lake in the Pacific Northwest. We launched our well-used Wave last year, and we really like it. The waters are really cold this time of year, and I'm thinking we'd launch it earlier if we were able to sail it "dryer". Do those of you who have the Wave backrest find it's worth the money? Huff |

I doubt the backrests will make things any drier - you aren't supposed to sit on them. From my (admittedly limited) experience with the Wave, it's just not a dry boat - the tramp is quite low to the water and the bows like to direct waves up onto the front of the tramp, so you end up sitting in puddles (especially with the standard take-apart Wave since you can't get the tramp as tight as the Club). Where in the PNW are ya? I'm in Vancouver (WA not BC). The water NEVER warms up around here, except may be behind the dams in the Columbia in a low-flow year where it just sits there. Not gonna happen this year - record snowfalls mean they are already dumping water like mad through Bonneville and probably will continue to all summer. |

Thanks for the info. I first noticed the Wave Backrest as a seat on the Getaway. I just assumed the same seat is provided for the Wave... Wrong! I live 40 miles North of Vancouver USA on Silver Lake where the weather at 500' altitude is a wee bit cooler. Huff |

has anybody rigged a "custom" backrest and/or seat? please post pictures if you have. i may be alone on this but after a couple of hours i get serious sore ass and aching back. |

Huff I bet the views are nice, though! If you have a trailer, pickup, or another way to move your Wave around you should come meet up with the Portland/Vancouver group sometime (Hobie Fleet 72). We generally sail in the Columbia and on Yale lake. Email commodore at hobiefleet72 dot org and introduce yourself if you are interested and/or check us out on our website at www.hobiefleet72.org. Always fun to hang out with other sailors, learn new stuff, and have fun (and teach us about your boat, none of us have a Wave). |

I have the backrests, and love them. Yeah, some may argue they are pricey, which they are, but there are other threads here which go into that. I was lucky, I got a deal on them w/ my purchase of the Wave when new last year. Defintely increases the comfort (and security) for casual sailing, particularly with the small members of my family. And they can be removed quickly for those times that you want to hike out when it is really blowing. |

I built some seats for my classic WAVE out of PVC pipe, duckcloth, and pipe insulation (to pad the pipes that come in contact with the hulls. The seats overlap the hull and are secured to the tramp tracks. I sent pictures of the seats to Indywave on this forum, but it turns out that he has a CLUB model which does not leave the trampoline tracks accessible for the tie in lines. The seats are pretty comfortable and secure, but my feet still get wet so I wear water booties. |

[email protected]. winds this afternoon steady 15-20 mph gusts up to 25. i flew a hull for a few seconds before i realized i was flying a hull and quickly depowered. next time i won't be so surprised and frightened like a punk. |

hey corey, i just saw your message but i didn't see the pics if you sent them saturday. i probably deleted them without even opening it, i get alot of crap mail, could you resend 'em please? i took my boss and his 12 year old daughter out sunday afternoon after a few minutes instruction he and her were off together while i followed in my adventure island. we had a 6-7 foot dolphin for company for about 10 minutes coming within a few feet several times needless to say they were thrilled. i think we'll soon have some new members join our ranks. |

Hi Brad, I'd rather not. I don't mind sharing with other sailors but don't really want to publicly post. The Hobie WAVE is a niche market, and I have come to the conclusion that the potential profit of manufacturing and selling this seat design would not be enough to compensate derailing my career. But, this could change, who knows what's around the corner in our lives? Moreover, I would be heartbroken and severely bummed if someone else took my concept and marketed it without even a thank you so very much.
