Post subject: | Transporting an Outback |
I got an Outback a few months ago and have been transporting it face down on my roof rack. I am thinking of purchasing a 2nd yak but don't have enough space for 2 yaks face down on the rack. I am trying to avoid purchasing "J" style racks. Does anyone know if the Yakima Mako or similar face up racks will work with the hull design of an Outback? |

It can be done. I carry an old hull style Outback and my wife's Sport on top of a Jeep Liberty side by side with Mako's & Hully Rollers. Roll up on the Rollers from the rear and rest on the Mako's forward. I thought I was going to need 78" bars but ended up going down to bars just wider than the mounts - just a little overhang on each side. There was enough room to attach outside where I needed to. You do need (here's the qualifier) to get your spacing right so that when you snug down that the hull doesn't compresses down on the crossbar. I tend to over do it with tying down and had to "experiment" before I was happy with it. |
