Anyone ever use/consider a series drogue for controlling surf landing in a kayak? Thinking of making a 10-cone setup & trying it out. |

I have attempted to use a sea anchor and all it did was extend the time that I was in the surf zone and cause way more waves to wash over the deck of the yak. Down here in Florida we just ride in as far as we feel comfortable then we jump off and use our bodies as the sea anchor by hanging on to the back of the yak to keep it straight. Because we can swim with the yak it is a faster landing than dragging a sea anchor. Fewer waves hit us as a result of less time in the surf zone. You need to be careful that the wave does not rip the yak out of your grip. If that happens it will be bye bye yak and a yard sale at the beach. To prevent this you can attach a rope that trails behind you. If you lose the grip on the yak you can grab the rope or even hang onto the rope and play out some length as needed to make it through the wave. All this being said, I recognize that we rarely have waves here that are bigger than 3-4 feet and they are usually just a shore break. Some of what I say may not be practical in California-sized waves that form and run for hundreds of feet. Take what I say as a solution for only small wave situations. |
