I got this off a board on a debate of Hobie vs other kayaks and stuff. Seems kinda fishy, I couldn't find anything on the internet.

:A fairer comparison would be to one of the better prop driven HPB watercraft (Human Powered Boats). These boys are serious and some of them compete with and against Hobies. Their competitions are serious and well documented. Here's some typical results - out of 12 HPB's, most prop driven, one paddler and Hobie Mirage Tandem with two pedalers:

1. The Hobie placed 7th in the 100 meter sprint.
2. The Hobie was 5th in the slalom.
3. The Hobie finished 8th in the drag race.
4. The Hobie was 5th in the 2K criterium, and
5. The Hobie did not place in static thrust.

In a fair contest the Hobie - with two pedalers, yet - was eighth against singles in competition. In overall points the Hobie Mirage Tandem was 7th. Regarding static thrust, the leading prop craft produced 72 lb. Hobie won't reveal theirs. More "technical" claims by Hobie:

That "data" is from a guy who had a chip on his shoulder about Hobie products in some kayak fishing forums. From Florida (User name "Jimbo"?)... several years ago. He spent lots of time trying to argue against the performance of the MirageDrive. The comparisons were pointless. These (even IF true... and we all questioned that) were compared to glass, carbon and even hydro foiled water craft. Several years later... he is banned from those forums... and Hobie has gone on to be the number one selling sit on top kayak in the industry.

Yes, that looks like Jimbo's work. I'm familiar with the events he refers to -- old regional HPV competitions. They aren't outright lies, but deliberately manipulated misrepresentations. It would be as if I told you that in the Dana Point Regatta last year Hobie Adventures took the top 4 places and none of the K-1 Olympic kayaks even placed. Technically this is actually true; I just neglected to mention that the race consisted only of Hobie Adventures.

I remember him from way back. I don't know that I ever made it all the way through one of his posts. Always seemed to overthink things instead of just enjoying fishing and the outdoors.

Here ya go Drew ... all the Jimbo you can stomach.
His forum seems to be quite out of date.

I could not read much of it myself found it too opinionated, one sided and definitely written with a chip on his shoulder. And his little fishing club snubbed anyone with a Hobie Kayak. So much for the local kayak fishing club. Wayyyyyyy toooo egotistical for my taste.

Ah, Cptn Jimbo. Yeah, he's tried singing his anti-Hobie tune at my website before as well. What a clown :-)

I hope you're all very happy ... Jimbo Sighting.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You know I always try to be the peacemaker. Every time I read an unfavorable post about my buddy Jimbo I make an effort to defend him. He is perhaps the greatest authority on kayaks we have in the Derelict Nation and you people just don't understand him. You all continue to pick away at the man like crows on a rotting corpse.

Sure he has been a tad self centered and some might even say "argumentative". But these faults, as you all see them, are just the characteristics of a great mind. Great minds come with a price and Jimbo has paid dearly. Even a man so great as mon Capitan can only take so much. And the mighty mountain will succumb to the forces of the incessant wind.

After all he is, as a wise angler once said, "just one man with a keyboard". How could he possibly continue to take the abuse you've all heaped upon him without cracking under the strain?

Well my friends, I ran into the good Captain today. He is now just a hollow shell of the magnificent Captain we once knew. We exchanged pleasantries and talked about old times. As he asked me how all his old KFS buddies were doing I could see the tears starting to well up in his now downtrodden eyes. It was a gut wrenching experience for me. I bid the good Captain farewell and left quickly before I too wept.

I don't think I'll ever be able to forget his face as I walked away. That look of someone who has been shunned will haunt me until the end of my days. I left him standing there, cast away like yesterdays newspaper, not knowing what to say.

I hope you're all very happy with yourselves.

Funny thing is I saw him too but did not recognize him selling papers at the Griffin Road/I-95 intersection.

Well all you Jimbo enthusiasts now have the low down on where he is now.

Let us all appreciate what we have.

If Jimbo would have owned a Hobie his life would be much different now.

Jimbo had many good points at times in his dicussions, and he was arumentative and egocentric, but so are many of us, to one extent or another. I never really saw or read his anti-Hobie posts, but where he ran afowl of KayakFishingStuff, its members, and on his site, too, was when he switched from the discussion of kayaks and methodology to berating and dinigrating the people who were in the KFS discussions with him. Many took offense with this.

In the post above, the speaker, and possibly Jimbo himself if we met him today, attempts to make others the cause of his problems, when that is certainly not the case. You cannot blame on others what you have caused yourself. The blame lies with the individual. It is easy to play the victim, but others are not guilty of something that resulted due to your own actions.

If Jimbo is selling papers on a corner, members of the Hobie Community and KFS certainly did not cause that. He did!!

So right you are Harold,

We all make our beds and then must sleep in them. Too many blame others for their own misguided or lack of common sense decisions. Oh that is right "Common Sense is not COMMON." But then some people just are never at fault at all no matter what. It is always someone or something else to blame.

Still is sad to see anyone fall on hard times regardless of the reason.

Even if all that were (is) true, my response would be the same.

So? :?: :?

I am happy as a clam at high tide with my BigA and turbo fins. Yeah, there are other pedal drives out there and some even have reverse, but this one is doing just fine with me in it and catches tons of fish (which BTW is the only reason that I'm in the boat).

If I wanted to go fast I'd have gotten a Fountain

I easily hit the limits on a 50# scale attached in between a turboed finned kayak and the dock. Normal/slow pedaling produced 18#s.
