Well today was my 35th bd and I can't think of a better way to spend it then on the water catching fish. I got a nice King on the way out to the bottom spot and then we all caught our 2 snapper in about 30 min and then we just worked on some KW snapper points. Between the 3 of us we caught about 20 or so snapper in the 20'' range in no time at all. A few kings & a small trigger. Another beautiful day on the water in PCB. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Great pics and Happy Birthday. I saw some other pics you posted recently that included a nice grouper. It looked like you were only maybe 1.5 miles out is that about right? What are KW snapper points? I'm in FWB and just getting into kayak fishing, though my Outback is pretty well equipped now. I go quite often, but inshore in Santa Rosa sound near Navarre. I'm looking to get offshore real soon though I have some challenges to deal with. Namely, no gps or fish finder, no kayak fishing buddies, and more surf to get through than you have in PCB. I've tested it once, but I'm nervous about loading all my gear and just hoping to get through the surf upright. If you don't mind, maybe I can ask a few questions.... Do you use public numbers? How deep of water are you for those snappers? How do you think I'd do random bottom drifting for snapper 1-2 miles offshore? I'm guessing I'd end up with a limit of sandperch and if I'm lucky a flounder or two. I've been on the party boats 10 miles out, but I really have no idea how close to shore I can expect to get into them on my yak. Thanks, Garrett Hobie Outback |

Hey Garrett, there are several forums that have a ton of info and also there are other yakers in your area that you can meet up with. http://www.pensacolafishingforum.com/Forum44.aspx As far as starting out in the gulf, pick a day that is calm, a North wind will push the surf down. You want to have everything tied down. There are several close in wrecks from 1/2-2 miles but you need to find someone with electronics to locate them. I have been going out with a fellow yaker that has some private #s close in, which is how we've been getting our snapper. KW snapper points is short for Kayak Wars an online year long kayak tournament. Each fish is worth a certain amount of points. This is my first year doing it and it's a lot of fun http://www.extremecoast.com/KW10/index.php. If you ever want to make the drive over to PCB to fish let me know ... |

Thanks Linda. Yeah, I've been waiting for that north wind. To keep the oil away too. It's about 30-40 miles west of here. I've been on that forum before, but before I got my kayak. Looks like there's quite a bit there and that KW tournament looks pretty cool too. I may contact you sometime when I think about heading over to PCB. I'm still working out the rack situation on my Jeep. Garrett |
