Hi,

Can the diamond RAM mount (1.5" ball) be used for trolling? I know the 1" ball is used for electronics. Thanks.

It can, but it really depends on how big of rods you are looking to run and the size of the fish targeting. I had them on my Revo but I went to the Scotty because they can be locked in. I had some big hits/screamers pull the ram Tubes down. They will work as a rod holder but I can't trust them. read this thread:

Or buy a RAM rod holder with a bulkhead mount instead of a ball mount. Almost exactly the same as Scotty style. Most Hobie kayak dealers just have the ball mount styles as thats what Hobie supply to them, but some others have expanded their range. Difficulty getting sockets to lock onto sockets is obviously the inspiration for that.

Nothing wrong with the low profile Scotty versions, except when you like making adjustments on the water.

Mine Aka mounted RAM balls are holding out well, sailing hard with the AI and trolling large bait. No 30+lb strikes yet, but my drag is set under 10 lbs anyway. All is good.

The drier your balls are, the better. I would advise roughing them up a bit with sandpaper and keeping a tight grip. Use the shortest extension possible. Long tubes are the easiest to bend.

Also choose the salt water rated METAL versions of the mount and sockets. They will grip better.
