[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu7r7sxpe8Q[/youtube] Ever since I took to trolling Rapala Magnum CDs from my AI, I've had a lot of success, catching a good variety of species in various waters, varied conditions at varying depths and speeds. They always work 100% out of the box, give good action at various speeds, and can stand up to multiple chompings a lot better than any other bibbed lures I've tried. Thats a summary of my experiences with them anyway. The above clip is a bit if a homage to the not-so-humble Magnum Count Down, showing off some of my better catches using these lures over the past 18 months or so. Enjoy |

Great video. I have two distinct freckles on my left little finger from boating a green striper on a new sharp rapala jointed minnow. I flinch when I see you pick them up by the tail with the lure still shaking. Keep the videos coming. Good work! Phill |

Great video - thanks for sharing. I agree that having a fish on-board shaking a lure with 3 good sized treble hooks can quickly turn into an all too exciting moment. My experience tells me that if even one of those flailing hooks grabs something (pants, pfd, hat or SKIN) things can go downhill very quickly. Here in Florida I use a number of lures that have multiple treble hooks, but I have learned my lesson. I always, and I mean ALWAYS, take a pair of pliers and bend the barb back into the hook. I only fish barb-less now. It makes life SOOOOO much easier in the kayak. I don't think I have ever lost a fish because of no barb on the hook, but since I fish catch and release about 90% of the time, it doesn't really matter to me if I did lose one now and then. yeah, I think barbless hooks - especially on trebled hooks - is a pretty good idea, partly because it makes for better catch and release, and also because, as you say, it'll always make hook removal from one's own flesh all the easier. Also a good idea for kayak fishing use simply because of the confines of the deck. And especially so regarding things like mesh pockets (Hobie, please, please replace these with a rubber mesh, like modern enviro-friendly nets) and also furling lines on yaks like the AI/TI. I've seen a few barbed hooks impale these before and it can get messy removing them. Infact, it happened to a buddy of mine this weekend just gone. In the photo below Steve was having a hell of a time getting the lure removed from the furling line:  I am giving serious thought to going barbless on my hooks now, for all of the reasons you mentioned, plus the ones I just added. |

Good vid Yakass. Cant wait till I can get my revo and chase the stripers around willow beach, arizona. On a side note, What kind of camera do you use for your vids? Maybe you can do a little vid on how to film from a kayak for noobs like me. Happy fishing bud. |

Azcharger, I use 3 different cams (4 in total). 2 x GoPro HD wide, mounted on bow and stern. I use a much higher quality Sony CX350v (I think it is) mounted on the front portside aka. That captures the action from the side. And in my pocket I carry a tenny-weeny Sony TX5, which I use for quick snaps and underwater footage. Its hard to describe techniques for using them, but I guess part of the secret to what I do is to try and have one cam filming at all times, because you never know whats going to happen next.

I'm glad I saw this, I'm determined to make a better effort to troll more. Yesterday I was out fishing for speckled trout, and boated a few throwbacks, and kept thinking there must be another way than all this repeated casting. I'm an experienced fisherman, but have only trolled my yak for crappies. I have the rod holders, but long trolling rods and tackle are forward mounted and trolled very slowly. I can see everything in front of me and watch for strikes, etc. Having the rods pointed backward, with strings trailing behind me is a new thing. What can you guys tell me about this? Keep it simple? maybe a rod on each side with a crankbait on each one? I got the part about barbless, will do that. Just rap about what works for you...from a simplistic standpoint. I have a Revo by the way, with scotty mounts on either side near the pedals. And I have 8" extension risers so the rod butts clear the pedals. I'd hate to rip something off on a strong hit. Set drag looser than normal on my two Shimano Calcutta reels? Thx! Mark |
