Post subject:  External Transducer

I am thinking of installing a higher spec fish finder than my current budget model. If I do I was wondering about rigging the transducer on some kind of boom along side of the display so that the transducer is in the water alongside the kayak. The plan would be to be able to raise and lower the transducer and remove for transportation, storage etc. I may get assistance from the local kayak fishing manufacturer/installation pro who says that the external transducer does produce drag.

Has anyone installed and external transducer and if so can they comment on whether this has affected the performance of the yak and to what degree. I currently have an Outback, although may change to a Revo at some stage in the future.

Cheers
Charlie

There is a minimal amount of drag. I can swing it up easily for silent running if I am in a hurry. Works great and I can move it from boat to boat.

Drag would be minimal if you do this wisely.

This may give you some ideas:

Looks great Tom, simplicity is always the most elegant solution.

Heres something for all to think of, years ago I had a set-up from Lowrance that floated with a transducer in the center of it getting it away from the boat and any of the interference that there was around it the graph worked incredible with that rig getting that transducer set just right really makes a big difference if its rigged up nicely it'll work great I've seen some truly inventive set-ups from the kayak fishing crowd the bass boaters really lack the imagination that the kayak crowd has brought to the water take a few pic's of whatever you get rigged up, and share it so the collective of all of us can grow I mounted my own transducer on the outside of the hull just as I would on a customers boat and leaving space for the structure scan transducer thats gonna be added to the yak in the next few months and this fishfinder/gps combo will be installed to my wife's Revo when I get my upgrade unit.
