Post subject: | Revolution RAM Mounting Questions |
I have three Revolutions that I'm interested in rigging for fishing. I would like to install standard RAM mounts on each gunwale just above the rudder up/down controls. My concern is whether or not the backing plate included with the RAM mount will fit the space and fit flush to the underside of the boat. Will this be a problem? I would prefer to install Scotty flush mounts but don't see how they would work in proximity with the rudder up/down lines on the underside of the boat. I have heard that Hobie RAM mounts (fly fishing and tube) have the backing plate included. Is this true? In addition, are there any issues with installing the RAM mounts? Specifically, is there any interference with the rudder up/down lines in the interior of the boat? Thanks so much! |

I have the Scotty's on my Revo. The key is to buy SS bolts, fender washer, lock washer and nut so that the bolt is just long enough to catch the nut. Sorry, it was a while ago so I just don't remember what length bolt. Works great. no problem with rudder lines. |

Ram offers mounting balls with a "thru-bolt" so there is no base to speak of. I used these on my Revo and found them perfect. ............ |

snookonahook, Just to add some input .. My RAM ball mounts are attached with SS screws and have been there for 3+ years and never had an issue. I never thru bolted them and they are still rock solid. I do not have the rudder up down cables but I did mount them where you are referring. ![]() Revo |

Depending on what you are fishing for, I would not recommend mounting your rod holders without some sort of backing plate!! I did this once on an Adventure that I received about three days before a tournament. I was in a hurry so I just bolted them in without any backing. I was trolling out to a spot I wanted to fish and A big Bluefish slammed my lure so hard it ripped the rod holder right off the gunwhale!! Luckily I was quick enough to grab the rod so I didn't lose it, but learned a lesson the hard way! As for mounting you could opt for the Yakattack Gear Track system and then you would be able to use jsut about any type of rod holder (or any other accessory) that you prefer. |

I mounted the Ram mounts behind the seat on my Revo, AI and Oasis. Works well for me there, no issues w/rudder lines and puts reel right at your side for easy access and keeps gunwales open for ff/gps, paddling and plenty of room to get in/out of yak. I use ss nuts/bolts/fender washers. Consider adding a handle back there also for easy lifting. ![]() |

I installed the geartracks on my Adventure. I bolted a 3/8" thick section of cutting board with (3) countersunk screws down the middle to clear the rudder lines. Then screwed the track to the cutting board with the supplied self threading screws. I use this for my camera, fishfinder and also a fly rod holder. For trolling I have a pair of Ram tubes mounted behind the seat like in BJB's picture. ![]() |

mullady76, I see you mounted nylon padeyes. Do you use those for you leashes? I'm going to mount some but haven't decided on those or going with stainless steel. |

Mullady76, Have you had any issues with your GearTrac slipping, or is it pretty secure? I'm thinking about getting one, but not sure how secure it would be without nuts. |

smearnoff5100, That is bjb's kayak with the padeyes. I personally would use stainless ones on my kayak. looshsmoot, It is secured to the kayak with backing plates and lock nuts. Well really the cutting board is bolted and the trac is screwed into 3/8" thick plastic. See pic. below. I was able to pick up the kayak by the Ram Mount installed on one trac. It is very secure, but I don't know if I would use it to troll for striped bass. ![]() |
