Post subject:  Misalligned Cart Post Bushings

Hi Folks,
New outback and Hobie Cart and the cart came with #80044201 cart post clamps/bushings. The instructions are pretty clear to " adjust the bushing position against the bottom of the scuppers and tighten. The cart should contact the keel and both scuppers." Well, with the cart/Kayak combo I have this is not possible. The posts rub the inside of the scuppers as they go in and when the bushings are on, there is no way they hit the bottom of the scuppers. Only the hull. and the instructions are clear that bushings against the hull will warp the hull. Anyone know what's going on? The picture says much.
Thanks!

The cart clamps are universal and not a perfect fit to hull bottoms. They are a way to reduce load off of the crossbar. On your boat that will do the job as intended to prevent the crossbar from denting the hull. The clamps are hitting an area with more structure. There are a number of posts in forums where people added tennis balls to soften the contact points, but that is a preference and not necessary.

I have a different cart and a different kayak, but the same issue.
It strikes me that it's not a "universal" design, but a poor one.

Well... "Universal" per definition is not a custom fit. The real issue is changes to kayak hull shapes since this was developed.

OK thanks Matt, fair enough.
Perhaps some new bushings are in order.

Agree. A softer contact would be nice too.

I cut a couple 2" pieces off a pool noodle. They slide right on, right on top of the bushings.

The Op was concerned about an Outback, I am trying to figure out my cart/dolly needs for a 2015 PA 12 I have ordered. The accessories catalog says this is for a TI, do you think it would fit or help with an Outback or a PA?

Image

The only reason I am so concerned about this is that I would probably want to leave the PA on the cart in the Florida sun at times when I camp at the beach. I see that the manual says:

"Do not leave your boat on the cart for more than one hour (less
time in warmer temperatures or direct sunlight)"

Would this cradle change that recommendation at all? If not, can I leave it on a dolly like the 80046201
PA/UnI for a longer period of time?

thanks,

I have such cradle for my PA12. It fits better without the collar bushings.

still amazed that Hobie does not offer specific bushings or some type of add on that would work for each specific model they have. I mean come on $250 for a cart that not only looks like it does not fit, but that it can cause stress.

I use tennis balls on my cart, I slide them over the bushings. I do not want the bottom of the hull making any contact with the cross bar.

I've never heard a report where the clamp caused a failure to a hull.

Specific parts for every possible hull / year model is very problematic for dealers and consumers looking to by a cart. I can imagine the ordering and stocking hassles, so I prefer the generic fit. A rubber ball would be nice though.

Matt,

As I mentioned above, it would be nice in my situation if the PA 12 could stay on the cart for a while, perhaps most of the day in the sun.

Would this still be discouraged if the scupper cart had the 80044202 cradle on it with the black rubber washers removed as in the picture above? Would the 80044202 fit the PA 12 hull?

Also, can a PA 12 be left on a dolly like the 80046201 PA/UnI without any concerns?

thanks very much,
fred

A cradle would help, but still not the best idea.

The cart cradle was designed only for the Tandem Island.

If you supported the bow on a padded crate or similar and then supported the aft with similar... You could leave it much longer I believe. Just spread the load.

Matt,

The fit on windnot's PA looks pretty good doesn't it?

https://flic.kr/p/oswPW5

I want to follow the manufacturers recommendations. I just need some clarification so I can decide which cart/dolly(s) to purchace.

Are you saying that the warning in the manual about not leaving a PA on the cart was not simply to prevent stress on the scupper holes, but that when using the TI cradle or even a PA/UNI dolly, when you support the PA in the middle and let one end (I assume the rear) tilt to be supported by the ground, that this two point support is not sufficient and the unsupported end will sag in the sunlight?

thanks very much,
fred
