I picked up my first kayak this past weekend. It's a used single person hobie Maui. My plan is to use it for fishing and trolling around in the marshes in south Louisiana. How will the Maui do fishing and are there any must haves I need? |

What part of Louisiana, and what kind of fishing do you do: Fresh or Salt? The possibilities for gear is endless depending only on the depth of your pockets. But like others in other posts, simple is the best if you're going to be fishing in heavy water in case you turtle. Just remember, if you capsize you'll need to re-enter. So practicing when it's not an emergency is a good idea. It will tell you just how old you are, if you're like me, and how out of shape you might not think you are in. But in any case it's a safety thing. Tight lines. |

I live in New Orleans on lake Pontchartrain so probably start off around there for a good little while in and out of the bayous. Also going to try fishing the marshes. Redfish and trout is the goal. |

Welcome to the wonderful, addictive, madness-induced world of kayaking! You will enjoy your Maui. It was the first Hobie kayak I ever had. I bought it used and was my first sit-on-top boat. I think the line of paddle boats Hobie makes are under-appreciated. I currently own a Quest 11 and an Outback, and I find myself taking the Quest out more often because of the weight and great design. Give us an update on your Maui now that you've had it awhile. I miss mine. |
