Installing a Lowrance Elite 3x fishfinder in a Hobie Quest is turning out to be more a a challenge than initially planned. The question I have is about the Lowrance 83-200 Skimmer Transducer; can this transducer shoot through a kayak hull or not? I emailed Lowrance a half dozen times asking before I bought it without a single response. When I called them, a Lowrance representative told me that it would work, no problem. I installed the transducer using Lexel, which has proven to work perfectly, but all I get are vertical lines on the fishfinder. ![]() After getting a replacement fishfinder(not from Lowrance, their warranty service sucks) and running some tests, it seems that the Lowrance Skimmer transducer will not work unless it is in the water. Maybe I'm missing something in the settings, I don't know. Lowrance customer service is terrible, no help at all. Every question I've asked them has been incorrectly answered. I realize that most Hobie kayakers have gone to the custom Lowrance mounts, but if you have this fishfinder and/or transducer mounted in the hull, any direct feedback as to the capabilities and limitations of the Lowrance transducer would be appreciated. |

I just got back from testing two Lowrance Elite 3x units and my old Eagle Cuda 168. The ten year old Cuda 168 was more accurate across the board; depth, structure and temperature, than the new Elite 3x. The Elite 3x is not able to shoot through the hull of the kayak like the Cuda 168 can, even though they use the same transducer. The stock Elite 3x cannot be used if you plan to use an in-hull mount, the transducer has to be in the water. I'm sure Lowrance has a $70 transducer that you have to buy if you want to shoot through the hull, or you can buy their $40 scupper transducer mount that will stick the transducer out the bottom of the kayak; not too practical. |
