Howdy Everyone: After my 3rd surgery in less than a year. I am ready to go to CA to fish the kelp and areas around Mission Bay. How is launching from the beach in La Jolla and what is the distance to good fishing if I launch out of Mission Bay to avoid the surf? I am planning to purchase the XL live well and would like to use my sail kit. I see everyone fishing there with no sail. To save my energy I would like to use my sail kit. Any pros and cons are welcome. Interference by the live well. Stowing the sail while fishing. Anyone out there use a sail kit. I can't wait to get out there. Love to get as much info as possible. Launching in the surf, running out of the bay. Thanks everyone. Hans |

La Jolla is a surf launch, depending on the surf it could be easy or dangerous. The hardest part of a surf launch is coming in off the water, regardless the size of the surf. Right now the boat launch is closed due to construction, so you have to pull your kayak quite a distance from parking to the water. The shoreline at La Jolla out to about two miles is MLPA (No FISHING). Good fishing about three to five miles out. Be sure to get a copy of California fishing regulations to know the closed to fishing areas, we have a lot of them and they're not marked! Mission Bay itself has some mighty good fishing for bay bass, halibut, corvina, ect. But, it sounds like you want to head out to sea, and that's about three mile to the nearest Kelp bed. You'd go out the jetty turn south, continue past the fishing pier until yo hit kelp o thick you can't pedal thru it. The fishing here is not as good or consistent as La Jolla but you can catch good fish if they're in the area. The end of the Jetty has a big swell so stay well away from the rocks out there. Mission Bay has two kayak shops right on the water, one is at Santa Clara Point and the other is at Dana Landing. Stop in either and talk with the staff and customers to get timely local advice. Don't forget about the big bay "San Diego Bay". Good fishing there also. Again you'll want to avoid closed areas. |

Thanks so much Baitman. You gave me a lot of great info. I was also concerned about the closures. How far from the bay you La Jolla fishing grounds? I just wanted to work from the bay up also. Has anyone used their sail kit fishing. If so any hassles. Figured I would use the sail to troll to La Jolla, stow it on the side when I reach the grounds then deploy it the way back. Thanks for the info. It there a chart or map available? All of you guys are the best. Thanks Hans |

You just have to be careful when stowing the mast in the sail it can slide out easily and overboard it goes. Mine went over once and fortunately I had mask and fins with me and was able to retrieve it. |

As a surfer, kayaksurfer, and windsurfer and now kayak fisherman: I don't think you'll sail OUT to anywhere unless there's a wintertime offshore wind or Santa Ana blowing. I would assume you'll be paddling or pedaling out to where you need to be. Then by late morning the onshore sea breeze will kick in and possibly assist your trip back in.
