Any thoughts on a half-size H crate or equivalent that could fit behind the livewell, or in front of it but behind the seat. Need more convenient storage.

I don't know if something like this would work on the Outback because the gunnel behind the seat is curved. But I mounted a 9" H-Rail behind the seat of my PA and attached a Hobie Tackle Bin. This gives me storage for 4 small Plano boxes, or two large one. I did this so that I would have extra space if I have a cooler-livewell in the kayak with no room for my Blackpak. You could measure and see if the 21" bar might fit as well. (Thank Steve Stubbs for the idea!)

Hi! STLKayak,

I like your Orion ...So nice

Just wanted to ask you a Q.
How do you plan to strap that Orion to your kayak when you're on the water? The reason I asked is because I'm also thinking about this for my heavy cooler. I'm thinking about building a simple cage (PVC around the cooler) in which the front and rear PVC pipe are attached to the kayak. Cooler is not attached to anywhere. With this design, the heavy cooler can drop out of the Kayak in the event of capsize which can be beneficial in flipping it back as the weight is lesser. Also trying to keep the sides straps free so I can continue to use these two sides for paddle and stake out pole.

This is going to sound really pathetic. But I returned the Jungle Camo Orion 45qt. It is an amazing piece of cooler design, and fit beautifully, I just did not like how the color scheme looked sitting on my Olive PA 14...and $450 for a cooler, I wanted it to be perfect. Also, I do not have an Orion dealer in St Louis, so there was no place to check them out in person. My local Jackson dealer doesn't stock them, just Yeti. So I talked to ACK, had them check the fit in the back of a PA14, and asked them how it looked, but they did not have an Olive PA on display, just a Dune. They are great about working with customers on weird requests, and assured me they would authorize a return if I did not like the color match.

I have since found a dealer at Kentucky Lake - and I am headed there to fish next Wednesday. I am going to check out the different Camo colors and see if one looks better with my PA. Hoping the Forest Camo might be a better fit.

As far as strapping it to the Kayak, I never got as far as coming up with a permanent solution. I kind of figured that if the lid were locked, the cooler would float without to much issue, so i was going to lightly strap it down for stability with a couple of 1" wide pad eyes in the deck, and maybe use a mirage drive leash to keep it from floating away. Like you, I feared getting turned over with it strapped in and not being able to right the ship.

I will let you know what I find at the dealer on Kentucky Lake, if I like one better, I will buy and shoot some pictures.

With that prize I would do the same. I will not stop looking for the best color match for my kayak.

I have a white 35 Yeti. Cheaper than Orion. I figured with that amount of money for a cooler, I like my daughter to also use it when she goes out camping. She likes plain white Yeti so I gave up my first choice. And no regrets as it looks ok in my Dune PA. I also have the Hobie crate which I plan to put behind the cooler so I can use the 4 rod holders for fishing rods, camera pole and flag/light pole.
