Brought my new Revo 16 to Montauk on Sat eve with plans to fish for cow Stripers. My buddy has a 27' boat, and the yak fit in there perfectly. As soon as we got to the spot we planned to fish, it was obvious there would be no yak fishing. Waves at least three to four feet higher than forecasted and tons of boat traffic (expected). Was really bummed I couldn't fish from the yak...but had an insane night of fishing anyway. We had a couple small fish, but practically every fish was at least 30lbs and we had two fish over 40. Kept one fish for the table. (40 lbs) Broke in my new Shimano Torium too. Bad ass !! Great night Image

Sweet fish. I wish I lived closer to Montauk. I settle for 4 lb fluke around here as abig fish. But then again, any fishing off my yak is a good time. Plus, I also do a lot of chumming in rough water...

The dozen or so Bonine pills I was popping like candy all day kept me from chumming. Without them I would have been in the fetal position begging to go in after the first hour. It's nice being close to Montauk...but still hour and fifteen without any traffic. That drive home after fishing all night is nuts. Rumble strips on Sunrise shoulder saved me three times. Not smart. Next time gonna crash for a couple hours before driving home. Even red bull couldn't keep my eyes open. Lesson learned. Here's pic of my buddies 44Image

I was so tempted to try...but knew it was amazingly stupid under those conditions. It was cake fishing, so hooking up with a fish over 30 was almost a guarantee. I saw sights on the fish finder that were crazy. Massive marks. Our friend had a 52 the night before, so we knew there were big fish in that area. I'll get another shot. I've landed fish over 30 on my PA14, and guided a friend on his first salty yak trip of 2015 to a 48lbr. But I've never broken 40 from the yak yet, and I'm pretty determined to do so. Especially after seeing this fish first hand. Last Nov. Convinced my buddy to abandon the surf scene because I had found big fish on peanuts from the yak. This fish caught one hour after launch. 48 lbs ImageImage

I'm a catch and release guy and don't eat fish. Only keep fish here and there for family and friends. Kept two Stripers all last season and a few summer flounder too, so I'm clueless on how to cook them. Many different ways I'm sure. I feel that returning the breeding size fish is very important these days. Taking home a trophy...one that has spawned millions of baby Stripers already and is full of off colored (non-viable) roe...that I can do without too much guilt. Must admit it does still bother me. Just don't like to kill fish. At 16, a buddy and I cleared a local hot spot of trout. Prob took home twenty five at least. No one ate them, and that spot was never the same again. Just plain stupid...but I learned my lesson. I don't look down on guys who keep fish though. I'm live and let live all the way. One of the nice fluke from Shinnecock Bay yesterdayImage

Good to see you getting out there. Must be getting a good feel for the yak now

What kind of set up do you use with the Geartraks?

Also notice you dont have your drive leashed? They can easily pop out in a roll over, and that can be expensive

I like to drift bait off one side of the yak while casting to targets on the other side. Usually a big chunk of bunker or an eel in a rod holder while I cast eels on another rod. I can switch the ram ball to either side and put the bait rod on the side that works best that night. Did this on my PA and it worked well. Bigger fish seemed to prefer the more natural presentation drifting a good distance from the yak. Also thinking of using them for a go pro and cube flash for some night still pics. Not much of a video guy but would like to be able to grab a quick pic before the release. Thinking camera facing me on one side and flash cube on the other might get some nice shots.
