I am new to forum just purchased a new 2017 Outback and would like to attach tracks and rod holders to the deck , I was planning on using 3M 5200 sealant and adhesive on theses items. I was wondering if this sealant is acceptable or is there any other sealant people are using ? |

Pretty much nothing sticks to polyethylene, especially anything loadbearing. Most of the gear tracks and accessories attach mechanically. FE |

Hi Tanadog, and welcome to the forum! 3M makes some powerful adhesives for permanently bonding to polyethylene. Scotchweld 8010 NS is one that works well, but is incredibly expensive. Nevertheless, i would not use for a high torque application like a rod holder. Why not just use a few SS screws with fender washers and lock nuts for that? If you are worried about drilling holes in your new yak, the "damage" done by 4 small screw holes is probably less than what the permanent adhesives would leave behind should you decide to do things differently at a later date. Marine Goop actually works pretty well for attachments that will not be under too much stress, such as for a flag or camera mount. It is not permanent and can be easily "rubbed out" like rubber cement if you choose to remove or relocate a mounting base. And check out the Hobie Adjustable Rod Holder as a good alternative on your Outback - it uses the molded-in rod holders. Have fun rigging! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk |

I would recommend using stainless screws for attaching track to the gunnel of your kayak. The plastic is very thick in this area, and you can get away with using sheet metal screws for light/medium duty applications. For heavier applications, I'd recommend thru-bolting and using a small washer and nylock nut to back it.
