Monday was a good weather window in So. Cal with very little wind until noon...so I decided to go look for a Halibut. Bait was easy to make as there were so many Macks chasing small bait that it sounded like a heavy rainfall when the baitfish would jump out of the water. I put about a dozen medium size Mackreal in the Hobie bait tank and then started power drifting upwind along the edge of the Redondo canyon...(this underwater canyon is only about 1/4 mile off shore and it drops to about 300' within 3/4 mi. from shore). The upwelling and bait concentrations along both sides of this canyon make it a great fishing destination. I fished till the wind picked up then started drifting in towards the harbor. I pinned on my last bait and whamo...28' Halibut on the line. I gaffed her and put her on the game clip then gave her a big headache to calm her down before bringing her on board. ![]() ![]() We had Halibut steaks stuffed with fresh basil leaves and wrapped in Procutto ham cooked in Olive oil...YUM...!
