Dan's Quick Release

What else to call this?

See discussion on fishing forum.

But thought this solution to quickly luffing mainsail was worthwhile in view of expense of quick release snap (proper nomenclature?) Roadrunner has previously posted .

I have solved the immediate luffing of the sail.

What I did. (Pic this weekend)

I inserted the main sheet through the clew and threaded it back in to form a loop on one side of the clew's grommet.

Using a cheap piece of clothesline (aha notice cheap) I inserted a piece through the loop.

I then drew the main sheet tight, the loop pinching on the piece of clothesline.

A simple yank on the clothesline followed by one on the sheet pulled the latter loose letting the sail luff.

Wala!!!! Dan's instant release block!! For a fraction of $30 plus cost for the latter. Not to mention no hardware to hit you in the head.

I subsequently modified the above to include a double piece of clothesline formed by simply tying an end loop on one end.

If you have other sailing apps try it.

Here's the initial try.

As stated I subsequently made a loop in the clotheline itself so two strands prevented the sheet from pulling through the grommet

An actual test during a crappy stick fish stike -pull the cord- then pickup the rod worked quite well.(BTW did not hook up the fish so the remaining procedure is to be proved.)
