Anyone that purchase an adventure in 06 (me) or previous is frozen out of an upgrade to an Island. However...if I am not mistaken the 20.4 ft sq sail was designed: 1. Prior to Sidekick 2. With other smaller Hobie's in mind. With Sidekick it seems to me the Adventure could handle something close to 25-30 ft sq. I need this for light air performance. As long as the sail can be reefed by furling I have no problem with stronger winds if required. Matt is there any possibility that Hobie would provide us this sail? A small reinforcement to the mast step might be required, but the area is close enough to the fwd hatch to use nuts and bolts through somekind of plastic/aluminum plate. A simple furling pulley would also be helpful. If Hobie is not interested in providing this upgrade path are there third party sail makers you could refer us to that are closer to your prices than Blough? This is not someting I have considered yet. I do think using the SideKick may be pushing the limits if the mast and mount. No real problems (some bent masts), but a larger sail would just be harder on them. We originally started with a bit larger sail and found it to be too much for most people. Depends on the wind and skill of course. I think a larger sail with added forestay and shrouds (made of lite line) would work. You would have to sew a small webbing to the luff as a tang. That way you would not stress the mount. The mast also could be the same diameter then. I am sure there are sailmakers all over the place that would be willing to make a larger sail. |

Thanks Matt for the suggestions. Yes I have found a couple of guys that will make a sail sending blind e-mails. BUT... they want a larger mast and I need to furnish one. Is your current mast stock aluminum tubing? If so do you have a supplier? Mos tof the mast manufacturers I have googled offer much larger masts than 7/8".  Also Do you have one of those larger sails you tested stowed in the warehouse?

No, I don't have a larger one. That was years ago. I believe the tube is stock (off the shelf) material, but we buy from extruders by the thousands of pounds. I would suggest that the upper can be extended by another material using a custom made adapter. I used to have windsurf mast extenders. Little 6 and 12" sections that plugged in to the top of an ampro mast. Someting like that would work. |

I have one of the original sails from years ago, not sure how big it, I found it to be to big to have fun, then again this was before the amas. there should be no problem getting an extension for the mast, am metal shop should be able to fix you up |
