Post subject:  Crack in Tandem Island
Hi all,
3.5 year owner of a 2012 TI. Sailed / Kayaked in it about 50 times.

This week I noticed a crack on the rear of deck, where the bungees get secured (SEE BELOW)
This is where we secure the heavy duty wheels and Esky, lunch box etc

Not sure when it happened, but we did take a lot of camping gear the previous trip.
The padeye is now looser and could be unscrewed, unlike the other one.

Any suggestions for how to repair the crack permanently ?
Polyester / epoxy resin? fibre glass ? take to dealer for repair ?
I'm not experienced at boat repairs myself.

Bad luck but looks like a simple plastic-welding job to me. Fortunately well above the water, not in a high-stress area of the hull and easily visible. If I am correct it shouldn't be a difficult repair or affect the integrity of the hull unduly when completed.

I would echo stobbo's plastic welding suggestion after unscrewing the black plastic fitting. In addition, suggest drilling a 3/16" to 1/4" hole at both ends of the crack, to stop it from migrating before welding.

I would suggest using the KC welder Pro (which comes with a selection of Hobie color welding rods) to fix this. Remove the padeye to make the weld and thread the padeye back in once it's all sealed up. This is a handy tool to have for the future. If you're not comfortable with doing the repair yourself, reach out to your local Hobie dealer and they should be able to help you out.
