Anyone on here have sail no 390, or know who does? Saw you guys on the Niagara River today, didn’t have my H18 out, but I’d love to sail with you guys sometime! I never knew anyone had a H20 in the Buffalo area! I see the H20 is rated pretty close to an F18, which I’m sure is partially thanks to a more wave piercing hull form and more sail area (as compared to a H18). Anyone ever raced head to head against a H18 or F18? |

A well sailed Hobie 20 will blow away a classic Hobie 18 on all points of sail in pretty much any conditions until it is so windy that the 20 is totally overpowered and unable to stay upright. My experience racing the 20 against old school F18s (Tigers about 15 years ago) was that the 20 did better upwind due to the longer hull length and greater upwind sailplan, but couldn’t keep up downwind due to the lack of spinnaker. My guess is that the modern F18’s are probably now as fast or likely faster than the H20 due to the continual design developments that have occurred over time. sm |

I believe Brian Joder runs a H20 with Spinnaker, and really enjoys it. Must be a California thing. The big difference between a H20 and an F18 is that the F18's have: A - the wave piercing bow, which allows them to partially submerge without fear of capsize due to water pressure on the top of the deck. B - the rear part of the hull allows for planing at speed. C - a bunch of newer design stuff..... Wish I had bought that 2010 Wildcat a couple of years ago.... |
