My main is very difficult to raise. When it hits the comp tip it becomes a two person effort to raise it to the top of the mast. I have to pull so hard on the main halyard that I have ruined the pulley at the base of the mast. See below. If I apply a generous coating of sailKoat I can raise the main by myself but only once. The next time I have to reapply the sailKoat. $$$$$
What can I do to make it easier to raise the main and is it possible to get a stronger pulley for the mast base?

I've just started using a roller furler for the jib. Is it possible to put small cleat on the forestay to tension the jib halyard? I have a small block attached to the jib tack that I use to help tension the halyard and I use a taut line knot to keep it tight. I haven't had any trouble with the halyard working lose but a cleat would be easier and more secure. If anyone using a jib fuller could post picture of how they manage the jib halyard that would be appreciated. Thanks,

I believe you can install a Harken Bullet block sheave in the mast base slot for the halyard (same type of sheave used for the downhaul). That should help reduce friction. Otherwise, I would go to the hardware store and just buy a big can of silicone spray lube and shoot the luff track whenever it feels tight. A can of spray lube should be relatively inexpensive. Of course also check the luff track for any pinches or areas that may cause friction and check the bolt rope area for frays that may be getting hung up.

For the roller furling jib halyard, it should be setup the same as the Hobie 18 system where a plastic cleat is attached to the tack of the sail itself. See the attached link for what is installed on the Hobie 18 jib. I think you could just use a soldering iron or heat up a nail red hot and plunge it through the sail to make the holes and then attach using screws and nuts.

Are you feeding the sail into the track opening and pushing up the track then pulling the slack with the halyard? Just pulling he halyard is not going to work.

Also remove the stainless steel “sail feeder” that’s installed in the opening of the luff track. It does more harm than good.

Yep. Middle pulley that up the inside of the luff track and pops out at the mast head where the ring is connected.

So the halyard runs in the luff track in front of the sail’s bolt rope or lift rope or whatever?

Correct. On the 17, 18, 20, 21 and any other boat with the halyard ring and hook system, the halyard runs inside the luff track of the mast, exiting at the pulleys at the upper and lower ends.

Replace the plastic sheeve at the top of the mast with a brass piece, or modify the existing one with a brass bearing race. You'll find the sail hoisting much easier.

FWIW If I push up on the luff of the main it starts to bunch up when it hits the comp tip.

In olden' days I could raise the main by myself and the stainless steel jaws on the sail track where very helpful for feeding the main into the sail track. I've never noticed them to be a bother?

I notice that Murray's sells a Harken sheave with ball bearings that has the same dimensions as the Hobie downhaul sheave. Can I replace the stock sheaves with the ball sheaves? Thanks
