Hi all Have recently been crewing my Tiger whilst other F18 sailors have helmed for me. When I used to sail in the Helm position I felt comfortable and stable in the Trapeze lines. Now that I'm in the crew position things aren't working out. It feels like all my weight is on my rear leg - I feel unstable and unbalanced. Any slight movement of the boat is causing me to spin backwards crashing into the Helm. Anyone else experienced this - what am I doing wrong? All the best, Fobos8 |

Would it help if you made your trap line a touch longer so you are lower? Have you tried placing your feet further together or further apart? When you crew, do you handle mainsheet? The geometry of where the crew is (vs where you are as skipper) is of course, different, especially when handling the main. Do you think you are 'working too hard' and therefore tensing up? Let us know how it goes. |

Maybe bending your aft leg too much. As a skipper you have to lean aft... as crew... not as much. Try adjusting knee bends. More aft knee bend will make you feel like you are weighted toward the aft. |

Thanks a lot for the replies and your suggestions. My wife who sails occasionally also says that she feels the same thing. Both of us are as extremely comfortable in the Helm trapeze but feel like we constantly about to spin backwards in the crew trapeze. I have be having my back leg very straight and my front leg bent in an attempt to stabilize myself by shifting my weight forward. Any else experienced this? Could the line we set up wrong? The straight leg can cause you to fall that direction if motion of the boat causes you to tip over center. Slight bends helps. |

If you are not running the main sheet, are you holding onto the jib sheet? Now that the jib is self tacking, few crew hold the jib sheet while on the wire. Maybe try holding the downhaul like to both run the main power/depower and allow a stability point. Your stance may also be causing problems, but the new crew requirements may be adding to this issue. |
