| Post subject: | Traveller Tune Up |
The traveller for both the Main and the Jib are in need of a tune up. So, what's the best/lowest cost way to make both of these smooth again? Can you just replace the bearings? If so, how do you go about this? Thanks, Don |

The jib traveler is not used much, so not as critical. It is stainless on stainless and not easily lubed either. Likely clean and siliconed is all you can do... then set and forget unless racing. Possibly you can de-burr the track and cars. The main track may be corroded and dirty, so clean it up, then start with silicone spray in the track and on the bearing sliders. Replacing bearings requires removal of the long cotter key, then pull the clevis pins through. The smaller bearings (roller skids) are harder to replace and require replacement of a couple flaired stainless parts. The skids slid along when the car is not loaded. |

We are talking the self-tacking car here? Dunno how that's not used much unless you don't tack

Oops! I was thinking standard Hobie 18. Sorry bout that. Main and Jib cars are best cleaned and lubed with dry silicone spray. Again, check for damage to the track and clean up any burrs. |

First thing to do is high pressure hose them, then use something like Dry Silicone spray or Sail Lube on the cars and the tracks. If you are still getting some resistance to moving you will need to replace the bearings. They are fairly easy to replace if you have the extra plastic piece that should have come with the boat. Actually only got one for the Main traveller. It allows you to assemble the traveller car with bearings while the car is upside down. Then with the plastic piece right next to the traveller slide it on. You can by the bearings at West Marine or were ever you shop. Later, Dan |
