Does anyone else sail the 16 by having the crew work the main.I am a pretty fit somewhat strong 160lb male and at times I have trouble two blocking the mainsheet. ![]() |

i've never had my crew work the main for me, but I have worked the main for skippers in the past. Much more effective of everyone can work together. |

I did it on an F18, it was a royal pain in the rear. The angle sucks and its hard to work it and keep your body really flat. I was almost a foot taller than the skipper, I told him I was of better use using my hieght for leverage, and work the downhaul constantly. If you were sheating from the center of the tramp that might be a different story, but there is no way that would work on a 16 if you ever planned on tacking. |

I haven't heard about having the crew run the mainsheet, but I know one of the top 16 racers in our area has his crew play the traveler upwind. sm |

Notice the crew is in the high position on the wire, and skipper low, allowing a better sheeting angle for the crew to work the main. In theory it makes sense that it's faster. To get to that level quicker the crew needs helm experience. Paul and I tried this technique a few times on the 20 (very few) and all too soon found it would take practice to be faster. That was the trouble...we rarely, if ever, practiced. ![]() |

I don't think the crew is set higher, he's just leaning in. The skipper is hanging onto the jib sheet?! Is it just to stabilize himself? |

You betcha. Can you imagine trapping with pretty much nothing holding you to the boat? |
