| Post subject: | Carbon fiber hot stick...class legal? |
I understand you can get the 'hot stick" tiller extensions in carbon fiber. Our rules however prohibit using materials that conduct electricity so I'm wondering if they are class legal. I'm pretty sure carbon fiber itself is a good conductor but I don't know if a composite carbon fiber / resin tube is. Anybody know? |

I did a little on-line research and found that composites containing conductive fibers are themselves conductive (how much depends on the fiber content of the composite and the frequency of the current). Carbon fiber panels can be used for RF shielding in addition to providing structural strength, thus their popularity in military applications. Inasmuch as carbon fibers are highly conductive, and that items like tiller extensions have a high fiber content, I would wager that they would be conductive - and therefore not class legal. |
