why are there 2 regattas on the same weekend in southern cali? if the north south challenge is a div 3 regatta, and big bear is division 2 regatta, is this a miss print or an oops? trying to get my calender set up for the year. thanks for any in put. |

This is a good Question. One Calendar shows one weekend June 14-15 for Division 3 and the other shows the NS Challenge to be June 21 - 22 for Division 2. |

Hang tight guys. I think there is a little rework on the div 3 schedule for another regatta, but.... Right now, the NS challenge will be at Cachuma, and is scheduled for June 14-15 Lake Cachuma hosted by fleet 259. I think it's pretty solid. Oh...and I can't wait until NorCal crew shows the SloCal crew how to sail! ![]() ![]() ![]() I figure that since it's a NS challenge there should some smack talking! Should be a super fun event! |

yea i can show all those so cal boys how to make a fast boat slow. it takes skill to make those slow laps look so good. Remember sailing and sex are two things you can be bad at and still enjoy doing. |

A quick history lesson... The original N/S Challenge was hosted by Fleet 259 (Santa Maria - San Luis Obispo) at Avila Beach, CA back in the late 80's. It was a rebirth of the "Annual Hardcore Lunatic Fringe Binge" open event hosted by the Lake Lopez multihull guys. Later it was moved to Santa Barbara due to the fact that Avila can be on the extreme side wind wise. After moving, the event became the first combined California State Championship for Hobie, NACRA and Prindle. This was actually the first step in a long road that would eventually lead to the SB Yacht Club hosting the Hobie 20 Continentals (2000) and the Tiger Worlds (2005). The Santa Barbara N/S Challenge event has since morphed into the "Wine & Roses Regatta". On the other side of the mountains... The Lake Cachuma (Cachume Challenge) event was born after a decision by local county government to allow catamarans on a drinking water reservoir. Larry Harteck was the first to organize a open multihull event there. Taking Larry's lead, Fleet 15 (Ventura) and Fleet 259 co-hosted the first Hobie events. Word spread about the great wind, flat water and great camping making this a "must go to" event. The Murray Family Tri-Tip BBQ was a major highlight of the weekend. The event continued with the help of Division 2 manpower and equipment after Fleets 15 and 259 could no longer support alone. I'm sure I left out a few things but it is nice to hear that the N/S Challenge now lives on at Cachuma. Great memories ![]() John Bauldry Former Commodore - Fleet 259 and Fleet 15 Commerce, MI PS: Jeremy...everyone knows the REAL surf city is Santa Cruz ![]() |

I was asked to help the local YC run the event because they'd never held a regatta before. The Saturday night dinner was in their club house on the only pier in town. You're right about the wind. We were face with big winds and huge seas for the last race on Sunday. I never liked to run short courses during a championship but the conditions forced us to call a Course 1 (A-C finish). We did use twice around. A lot of skippers thanked me later and said they would have gone to the beach if B mark was in the mix. It was a great event! |

That's why you have two hulls. The Big Bear regatta has been set for about the last 4 years where the Cachuma Challenge has been cancelled, or not scheduled for whatever reason. The BB Chairman has already put a questionaire out to us in So Cal regarding cancelling BB in order to support the re-birth of Cachuma. I'm sure the two division chairs will get their schedules out and coordinate for the best. I'm all for Cachuma, do they need a mark boat? Hey Dan, do you remember how to get to San Felipe? The Mexican Nave Admiral (Alcala) will be there this year and wants a ride on a Hobie. Rick |

I've heard through the grapevine that Big Bear is getting too congested... especially for the Tigers. Is that why the BB event is moving to Cachuma? BB is a great venue especially if you can get past the smog cloud blowing over the dam. I'll never forget the BIG earthquakes in June, 1992. The roads were closed due to rockslides so in true Hobie fashion...we raced. The dam is rated to a 9.0...but if it broke, all you had to do was go straight for LA or turn left for San Diego when you got to the bottom of the canyon ![]() |

Hey John, good to hear from you! Word on the street is that the tri tip is on!! You'll have to come out and sail! |

Big Bear is one of my favorite venues. I would hate to see this event not being supported, and canceled! |

Rick: Yeah I remember how to get there. Unfortunately Elieen is not so keen on going. I love the place but cannot use the time and money to go for a week if she does not come down as well. I also do not have a Tiger "proper". It is a tiger that fits into the F18 rules but not the class rules so I would not be eligible to sail my boat. If you need some help (PRO?) and have a place to keep "the help" without a big outlay I might be persuaded to come. I would be glad to find a boat to borrow to take your Mexican Navy friends for a ride while there. Later, Dan |
