Hello!

I'm curious if anyone here has knowledge/experience of taking their Hobie out to the reefs in the keys to dive and spearfish before.
I'm looking at heading down in October. Not asking for any secret spots. Just some tips and references. We're a military couple coming from OK for some time off.

Thank you for any help you may provide!

I just closed on a house in Marathon in 11/19 that is about an hour north of Key West and we are on the gulf side. It makes it a little easier being protected on the gulf side. We have a PA12, PA14, outback and eclipse sups at our house that is now listed on Airbnb for rent if you wanna go there and then commute down to Key west. If you have your own hobie then there is room for that too. I only had a chance to fish there so far but there is diving and spearfishing to come. I dove off an outback up here in New England and it if you clip your gear off and keep your fins on then you can hop right back on afterwards.

I lived in Marathon for 12 years. Sadly, didn't get my PA12 until after I moved away, but did a lot of kayaking on other yak brands.

Hawk Channel is between the shore and the main reef. It gets nasty, steep, short period waves in the prevailing east wind, and the reef is anywhere from 3 to 5 miles from shore. On most days, I would NEVER take a fishing kayak to the reef. An offshore, ocean going yak may be a different story, have no experience with those.

Hope this helps! :)
