Post subject:  Hatch O-Ring
I have a quick question for Hobie or anyone here. I have noticed my hatch has been leaking a bit. I assumed this was normal until I read some of the posts here. This post shows what a normal and "twisted" o-ring looks like: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=12020

I now realize my o-ring has always been twisted (I guess causing the leak) when I thought this is what it normally looked like (in the twisted picture). Is there anyway to prevent the ring from twisting or does anyone know if the o-ring has been redesigned?

as far as I know the hatches are Viking hatches and new o-rings can be ordered from them. I had to call to get mine.
I replaced both the front and rear o-rings and the rear sealed well, but the front hatch continued to leak after replacement. Perhaps some silicone lube may help the hatches seal better and prevent twisting when the hatch is installed; heck Vaseline may work. I sold the boat before I solved this issue on the front hatch.

If the hinged Hobie-designed Twist and Seal hatch... the o-ring is supposed to be able to twist. Use Silicone lubricant. Do not use petroleum based... it wrecks the O-Rings.

Hobie O-Rings are available from your dealer.

Thanks for the responses. Matt, are you saying that the pictures in the post I referenced above are normal? Meaning, when the hatch is open it is suppose to be twisted as shown?

I sail in the ocean and I'm afraid to put any lube on the seal for fear it will attract sand. Thanks!
