Post subject:  A-Frame Support Screw Sheared Off

Hi All,

I recently acquired a 2004 Bravo. I was out this past Sunday. It was good wind (9-10kts) with stronger gusts (20knt). While sailing, all was fine. Then we furled the sail completely to pause for dinner. It was quite choppy and the boat was bouncing around pretty good. Then, the support rod broke free from the boat and the mast started flopping about, coming off the mast step. I had to take the mast down, secure it to the deck and start paddling. After a few minutes, I flagged down a jet ski and they gave me a tow (with my line). I've seen the support rod available with the bolt built into it, but can I just get the bolt (and whatever the piece is that holds it in place) and replace it in my current rod. I know I'd have to drill out the 4 rivets. I'll also have to remove the shaft of the screw/bolt from the boat. Probably get a left-handed drill bit for that part.

Here's a picture of what's left in the boat: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qi8DagPXcyNGXBUA8

Thoughts?

TIA,
Chad

Yep. Biggest problem is getting that screw out of the hull. Drill and EZ Out. Not sure easy in stainless, but can be done.

Matt (or anyone else),

Can you speak to the screw itself or the bracket inside the rod?

TIA,
Chad

I’ve drilled one of these out. If you have a vice, take the post off and start with a small drill bit and work your way up. I left my post installed on the boat , which was messy. I got a new bolt from the hardware store. 5/16 18x1-1/4 stainless steel.
Good luck.
