Post subject:  Gin Pole
Hi All,

Being real close to 70, I have a hard time putting up the mast on my H16.

After some research I have followed the gin pole here

with a few mods.

1. I use my electric winch on the trailer.
2. I add "anti-sway" lines to the pole itself.
3. I use the main sail halyard to hoist anti-sway lines almost mid way up the mast.
4. I use the forestay to attach the pole to the mast.
5. After the mast is up I run a line around the mast as high as i can reach and tie it off. Then I run it
over the mast support on the trailer and cinch it up tight to the trailer making slack in the forestay.
Now i can release the forestay from the pole and hook it to the bridel.

The boat does not have a jib so the forestay holds the mast up forward.

It took a bit of time to set up the first time but gets better each time...

Thanks for the link. This is one of the most complete descriptions I've seen.

I get all that except how do you use the forestay to attach the gin pole?
This is where they are using a ratchet strap tightened around the mast, right?

A major 'aha' for me is using the main halyard to hoist anti-sway lines- great idea which I will try. So why not just hoist another, unattached, to grab when you want to tie off to the mast support?

It's great that you are making things easier and still out enjoying the wind and water!

The gin pole is strapped to the mast. Then the forestay is attached to the outer end of the gin pole forming a triangle consisting of the pole, the mast and the forestay.

The winch attaches to the pole beneath where the forestay attaches.

My winch is bolted to the trailer and runs through a pully about half way up the trailer mast support rather than being attached to the pole as in the pic.

Push the remote button and up it goes!
