Looking for rudders to my 21 se. Any possibilities out there? Or are there repair techniques?

Standard rudders will work on a 21SE. Only due to the spinnaker size and type used back then and a concern for reaching under full sail was the rudder made a bit larger. Even our standard blade is bigger than most catamaran rudders out there.

You could build your own rudders and it is not too difficult. My wooden rudders are 4 oz. heavier than the original fiberglass ones. Simple use the old ones as a template. Buy two pcs. of Mahogany 13" wide, 37" long and 1 1/4" thick. Which cost me $63 ten years ago. Lay the old one on top of the wood and trace it. Now, cut out with jig saw. I cut my 1/2" longer and wider...you can always trim it smaller and as the end wears, you can reshape it. Next, I borrowed my brother route table...very cheap setup that worked great. Use a bullnose bit on the top area and more of a "knife" bit on most of what left. Next, I borrowed my buddies grandfathers large rasp....20 minute later..one rudder was ready for sanding, fiberglass and painting.

My only regret was not building an extra set because the time spent fiber-glassing and painting one side at a time was minimal in relationship to the cleanup time.

If a wood finish is fine for you....you can build yourself a pair of "prototype" very quick...and learn as you go. :)

I did have four Teflon bearing milled that I glued within the wood were the bolts pass through. No wear or friction at all.

Pretty much anything made from fiberglass can be repaired.
I have done pretty extensive repairs to my rudders as I sail with a spinnaker and they idea of rounding up on a reach gives me the heebie Jeebies.
I'm guessing though that the standard rudder would work fine even running with the spin.
I'm happy to assist if you want to post some pictures with your issues.

I think I will make some glass covered wood backups as Bill did. It will give me something to do this winter!

I am building an extra set of mahogany/fiberglass rudders for my 21SE as a fun winter project. :D Spares are nice!

If anyone else needs a set of these large rudders, let me know.

I have built a set a decade ago which I still use each season, so they do hold up well.

Heya Bill,
I'm interested! I repaired mine last summer, but I'd love to have a spare set!
I do run a spinnaker all the time, so I don't want to undersize the length.
What would you charge me?

Well,

I am gearing up for a production run of Hobie 21SE rudders just I like I made a decade ago. I have enough mahogany to build two sets....I will get another length of lumber for an additional two sets that will be available to the public. I will need to have some teflon bearing made and then production will start. Hopefully by the end of April they will be finished.

Let me know who would like a set and we can help keep these boat a going... :)

Sheet In .............. :D
