What I'm actually hoping for is a capacity boat with a little more zip. How does the H21 SC far as far as speed goes? |

21SC's are much faster than Getaways. They can also handle the weather a little better. http://www.ussailing.org/racing/offshor ... d-classes/ Getaway D-PN 83.3 Hobie 16 D-PN 76 Hobie 21 D-PN SC 74.5 In calmer conditions I have sailed my boat with 10 people aboard. The boat does take a little more set up time. The mast is quite a bit heavier than most beach cat masts. However once rigged the boat is a dream. The roller boom setup makes it easy to drop and raise the main. The boat points fairly well, and can carry a lot of beer. ~Joe |

I would not put a lot of stock in the Portsmouth ratings shown for either the 21SC or the Getaway. Those numbers are developed based on data gathered from racing results and I highly doubt either of those boats have seen much racing action, so not much data to get an accurate number. The DPN rating shown for the 21SC is almost the exact same as the H17 which is very, very unlikely. sm |

Well in that case, it is time for some anecdotal evidence! On multiple occasions I have passed Getaway's while sailing my 21SC. The Getaways always had crisper sails, lighter crews, and much less beer in their coolers. Joe |

You can guess pretty closely which is faster and by how much using the following formulae developed in AUS...seems to be reasonably accurate comparing the boats I've owned or raced... All measurements in meters/kg. Length raised to the 0.3 power Total Sail Area (sq meters) raised to the 0.4 power (if comparing jib and main boat use just jib and main, if both have spins, add spins area as well). Weight (kg) raised to the 0.325 power (add crew weight and boat weight using same number crew before raising to power) Length**0.3 times Total Sail area**0.4 / (Boat+Crew)**0.325 Bigger the number, faster the boat. It "should" be a number close to 1 for example, I get around 0.94 for Getaway with a 13 sq m spin and crew weight of 170 kg. AUS use this as a basis for time correction in mixed fleet racing. They usually have to tweak the numbers because people tend to whine about ratings. I refigured the Getaway without spin and get 0.76; used posted specs for 21SC without spin and get 0.93...so you can be very certain that the 21SC will be a faster boat than the Getaway...about 15% faster. SO, no spinnaker you can expect the 21SC to reach 17 kts vs. top end of Getaway at 15 kts. |

I made the deal, so for a while I will have a 21 and Getaway. |

Side by side, the 21 looks huge, compared to the getaway. ![]() Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk |

That's a nice looking boat there. You'll find the boat sails bigger than the getaway as well. |
