In another week, I will return to Florida's panhandle to add a new top down furling spinnaker and hardware kit to my 1989 Hobie21SE. Randy Smyth had designed this new sail and has put together a hardware kit. My part of this project is the spinnaker pole which my buddy Bill gave me and JWOLFMACHINING.COM is milling the end cap for this pole. Thanks to my network of friends, this project is all coming together. My new friend Barb let me store my boat at her home in Fort Walton Beach, FL. and Rick Adams secured my boat from hurricane Nate. :D

Retirement is great! Spend your life building for the future and WOW here it is........see you on salty waters......Indiana Bill is returning to Fort Walton Yacht Club to sail with friends.....sheet in! :wink:

I am still looking for an extra mast or comptip for my buddys Hobie 21SE, please help him get his boat on the water.Thanks!

How well did it work? What hardware did you use? Any photos you can post?

I've been thinking of doing this to my Getaway. The snuffer bag is such a pain to setup and use. But this seems expensive. I've seen one setup that I think is suitable, but it's about $1000 for the furler, top rotator, and I'm not even sure if that includes the anti-torque cable! I've seen a Ronstan setup for about $100, but not sure if it is suitable for this.

My new top down furling spinnaker work great. Once my kids are home for the holidays, I will have them down load some photos..... :?

Now, I am looking at a new Whirlwind Super R square top main sail and new batten too...and possible upgrade my original aluminum mast to a custom made carbon fiber mast...why not it is only money and my friends are looking for a spare 21SE mast setup too... so I may as well task someone and get things moving along..... :lol:

Green with envy, but I retire Jan 1, so right behind you. Hope to see pics soon, the Se21 sounds like a beast. Winterizing my H17 after a mixed results first season. Might snowbird a season or 2. Good Luck!

ummmm.... Bill......our 'old style' boats were never designed for square-top sails.
We have to go through all kinds of contortions to maintain a tight leech.
I love my Pentex Whirlwind sails, and if I were to replace, I would NOT take a square top.

It took us a whole season to figure out that we have to allow the mast to rotate as much as possible, (so that the mast would flex in the minor axis) thus tightening the centre of the main sail, and then crank in the main sheet HARD, so we can maintain an efficient leech.

My suggestion is to go with the colour and style you like, but stick with a pinhead mainsail.
For better 'drive', use a spinnaker.

Square top sails work great on 49ers and 29ers and 18 Skiffs and more modern boats with a more modern rig and more flexible masts.
