I have just refurbish a se and looking for a spinnaker upgrade. I am interested in the configuration where no pole is necessary, like illustrated on the 21se manual. The tack point is attached to the leeward bow, that s it and it looks sufficient. The hull length is sufficient not to add a pole extra length ! I have tried to look for information about this through the forum, without success ! Someone can provide me more information about this set up? I ll be fine. Is this sail still on catalogue, i bet no. Is the design of this sail available, so that i can produce one. I am located in La Baule, France. Thanks for any advises |

You're about right on all points: 1) Sail is not available - you will have to have one made or find one used. 2) The boat works pretty well with the massive old style spinnaker There are other options, though. One gentleman I know of added a top-down furling, assymetrical spinnaker. Even easier to launch and retrieve, while giving you a little more performance. See Beachcats.com - might be able to find something there. |

Thanks for your feed back. I m intersted in the basic configuration. The sail is massive but looks not so deep. Do you think that there is a chance to get the sail deimesnsion, lofting, so that I manage to have one made. I can also think about a furling gennaker, but is far from the simplicity of the basic set up. So happy to cruise this fantastic fast old lady. Comfortably 60 miles in a day provides you a wild game play ! Cheers, Gautier |

That original spinnaker setup was forgotten about soon after it came out, for good reason. |

The original bubble spinnakers, like what they were called, were pretty small. In Prosail, we used the largest possible asymmetrical size that would fit. The foot would go all the way from the tip of the pole back to the turning block at the back of the tramp, and maximum luft too. They were not symmetrical like the little original bubble chutes were, so you could use them sailing higher. |

I agree that a bubble spinnaker isn't much use on a cat. Do you have any pictures or measurements of your asymmetrical spinnaker ? |

No measurements. Pictures somewhere, but that was before digital, so they're probably buried in a drawer. I still have the boat, and sails, but too busy to pull it out anytime soon. Sailmakers should still have patterns. They weren't any better than anything made now. Mine is a North, which was not as full as Hood, and several others. On the short Prosail courses, it was better to sail low to the mark, most of the time, so the fuller sails worked best for that. Also, after the Prosail Series was over, some guys, including me starting using spinnaker poles that were a foot longer than the stock pole, that didn't stick out the front to amount to anything. We all still used the same sails we had used in Prosail, but they did work better with the longer pole. The extra foot gave you a lot more room to work with the sail. You could not take it down to windward with the stock pole. |
